Secondary Positions Guide for Build A Soccer Squad

How secondary positions work in Build A Soccer Squad: cover extra slots, protect chemistry, finish a 4-3-3, and stop benching your best-linked cards.

Last updated:

Secondary positions are the quiet mechanic that saves most mid-game elevens. The Captains update let a card cover more than its primary slot, so you can finish a 4-3-3 and keep nation / league links instead of stuffing an unlinked 92 OVR into the hole. This page is the dedicated how-to. The broader link system lives on the chemistry guide.

What a secondary slot actually does

A card still has a natural position (ST in ST, GK in GK). That natural slot is the chemistry-friendly default. A secondary position is an extra legal slot printed on the card.

Use it for two jobs:

  1. Finish the eleven. No natural LB, but a CB lists LB as secondary — field a valid back line.
  2. Protect links. Your best-linked CM is about to hit the bench because you pulled a higher-OVR unlinked CM. Shift the linked card to a listed secondary (LM / RM / CDM if it has one) and keep the chemistry spine.

Natural position still wins when both options are legal. Secondary is the rescue tool, not the default for every star.

Build order that actually works

  1. Pick a league core with enough depth to fill most of a 4-3-3. Formation templates.
  2. Layer nation links on neighbors.
  3. Fill holes with secondary positions you already own before you spend coins.
  4. Only then buy a Prime or chase GOAT Edition for that slot.

This is cheaper than shopping a new fullback every session.

When not to use a secondary

  • The card does not list the slot. Forcing it is a grey chemistry line.
  • You are moving a GOAT Edition or Limitbreaker into a secondary that breaks every neighbor link just to screenshot the badge.
  • You have a natural-position card with equal OVR and better links sitting on the bench.

Preview Squad OVR after every move. If the number drops, undo it.

Secondary positions vs captains vs GOAT

SystemHow it interacts
2026 captainsA finished squad is already linked. Secondaries help you reach that last index tick by fielding legal elevens while you grind.
Cup Mode93 OVR entry cares about the preview number. A secondary that restores links can be the difference between 92.8 and 93.1. 93 OVR rush.
Best XI / GOATHistoric icons often look unlinked next to a 2026 core. A listed secondary can park a GOAT Edition on the pitch without smashing the league spine. How to get GOAT cards.

Common mistakes

  • Ignoring the card face and assuming every defender can play LB.
  • Mixing four leagues, then using secondaries as a band-aid instead of committing to one core.
  • Benching a linked 88 OVR because a 94 OVR with no secondary and no nation landed in the shop.
  • Spending GOAT fuel on random 2026 shops instead of Best XI, then blaming secondary positions for a low rating.

Check the card, keep the links, finish the eleven. That is the whole secondary-position skill.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What are secondary positions in Build A Soccer Squad?

Secondary positions let a card play outside its primary slot. The Captains update added them so you can finish a formation and keep strongly linked players on the pitch instead of benching them.

Do secondary positions lower chemistry?

Playing a card in a listed secondary slot is valid. Forcing a card into a slot it does not have usually hurts links and Squad OVR. Check the card before you lock the eleven.

Should I use secondary positions in a 4-3-3?

Yes when a natural fullback or wide mid is missing, or when a linked CM can cover a hole without breaking the league core. Templates: formation guide.

Do GOAT Edition and Limitbreaker cards have secondary positions?

Variant tiers still carry positions. A GOAT Edition or Limitbreaker that lists a secondary slot can hold chemistry the same way a captain can. Preview Squad OVR after you move it.
